Time to start thinkin’ up some new passwords—yours were (almost certainly) leaked.

Researchers at Cybernews, a cybersecurity watchdog site, announced they had discovered one of the largest data breaches in history: leaked datasets containing 16 billion login credentials from Google, Facebook, Apple, and “any other service imaginable.” The passwords were likely taken over time, from multiple sources, and by various infostealers before being compiled and briefly exposed.

Cybernews says the data breach gives hackers and scammers “unprecedented access” to consumers’ accounts, and that much of the data was likely duplicated, making it “impossible” to determine how many people were affected.

Experts are reiterating the importance of practicing good password hygiene, including using a variety of strong passwords, changing them frequently, using two-factor authentication when possible, and flossing passwords every night (not just before a checkup).
