Reignited

After a month-long pause, the U.S. and Iran have rekindled direct fire. 

Sunday, the U.S. struck Larak Island, Iran’s military foothold in the Strait of Hormuz, targeting two rocket launchers “posing an imminent threat” of minelaying. In retaliation, Iran launched attacks targeting American military personnel on two Jordanian bases and a UAE air base. Monday, President Trump promised a “response.”

Yesterday, Washington launched new strikes, which Tehran said the U.S. would “regret.” Trump threatened more if “Iran retaliates for very justified attack.” Last night, Iran launched new missile and drone operations on Jordanian bases. 

Between Sunday and yesterday’s strikes, Iran said it’d return to June’s ceasefire framework (see our explainer recapping the terms) if Uncle Sam did, and Trump said that an agreement wouldn’t be “worth the paper it’s written on.”
