Centibillionaire v. Billionaire

Silicon Valley heavyweights Elon Musk and Sam Altman are stepping into the ring courtroom.

Opening arguments began in a California federal court yesterday as Musk—an OpenAI co-founder—is suing the company, fellow co-founders Altman and Greg Brockman, and major investor Microsoft for $134B in “wrongful gains.” 

Musk claims defendants used his clout and cash to abandon OpenAI’s humanity-helping mission and turn the nonprofit into a “wealth machine.” OpenAI argues the now-xAI leader—who left OpenAI in 2018, 13 months before a for-profit entity formed—wanted “absolute control” of the startup and calls the suit a “baseless and jealous bid to derail a competitor.” 

Beyond the $134B, which he says he’d donate to OpenAI’s existing nonprofit, Musk wants the ChatGPT creator to ctrl-x Altman, Brockman, and its for-profit arm—a move that could close OpenAI’s path toward going public.
