Sovereignty Reins

Journalism was favored, but Sovereignty took the crown at the 151st Kentucky Derby. (Great names. Great. Names.)

This year’s field made history as all 19 horses descended from legendary thoroughbred Secretariat. The equine family reunion was rainy but exciting; Sovereignty trailed until the final, muddy turn, pulling ahead to earn a blanket of 554 red roses and $3.1M for his owners, breeders, trainers, and jockey.

It was Venezuelan jockey Junior Alvarado’s first Derby win (after six appearances) and the second for trainer Bill Mott, whose Country House won in 2019 after the initial winner was disqualified. There’s no time to horse around, though. If Sovereignty is competing for the Triple Crown, the next race—the Preakness Stakes—is just 12 days away.
