Train Collision

Two high-speed trains collided in Spain Wednesday, killing at least 69 people and injuring dozens more.

Around 8:30 a.m. local time, a computer failure knocked out the Madrid–Seville line's signaling system, halting a privately run Iryo train and several others. Minutes later, rail controllers reportedly cleared a state-run Renfe train behind it to resume “at normal speed,” then learned the Iryo was still stopped. The Renfe then traveled ~15.5 miles (likely reaching ~124 mph) before crashing into the back of the Iryo, derailing multiple carriages.

An investigation is underway into the fatal crash and the communications around it. It’s the second deadly accident on the 34-year-old line this year, which Spain’s PM Sánchez says is “not acceptable.” Protestors gathered outside the Transportation Ministry Wednesday night, clashing with police.

Three days of national mourning have been declared.

PRAY WITH US
God in Heaven, to You alone, we cry for help. Heal those wounded and traumatized, beaten down by the wrongness of the world. Comfort families whose normalcy was suddenly shattered; draw near to those who lost what cannot be restored; steady neighbors unsettled by sorrow. In their souls’ raging storm, draw them into refuge and speak Your words of life.

Equip local leaders to manage unexpected needs; rebuild failed systems in Spain, and rebuild public trust in the infrastructure that supports them. You alone, God of Unsearchable Judgments and Inscrutable Ways, we will worship.
Amen. (read full prayer)
