Train Collision
Two high-speed trains collided in Spain Wednesday, killing at least 69 people and injuring dozens more.
Around 8:30 a.m. local time, a computer failure knocked out the Madrid–Seville line's signaling system, halting a privately run Iryo train and several others. Minutes later, rail controllers reportedly cleared a state-run Renfe train behind it to resume “at normal speed,” then learned the Iryo was still stopped. The Renfe then traveled ~15.5 miles (likely reaching ~124 mph) before crashing into the back of the Iryo, derailing multiple carriages.
An investigation is underway into the fatal crash and the communications around it. It’s the second deadly accident on the 34-year-old line this year, which Spain’s PM Sánchez says is “not acceptable.” Protestors gathered outside the Transportation Ministry Wednesday night, clashing with police.
Three days of national mourning have been declared.
PRAY WITH US
God in Heaven, to You alone, we cry for help. Heal those wounded and traumatized, beaten down by the wrongness of the world. Comfort families whose normalcy was suddenly shattered; draw near to those who lost what cannot be restored; steady neighbors unsettled by sorrow. In their souls’ raging storm, draw them into refuge and speak Your words of life.
Equip local leaders to manage unexpected needs; rebuild failed systems in Spain, and rebuild public trust in the infrastructure that supports them. You alone, God of Unsearchable Judgments and Inscrutable Ways, we will worship.
Amen. (read full prayer)

Milwaukee’s Moment
After brewing for 57 seasons, Milwaukee has won the World Series.
The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday (watch the final out), and catcher William Contreras, who batted .381 against the Rays, was named Series MVP. The Brew Crew looked good all year, winning a franchise-record 103 regular-season games and boasting an 11-2 postseason record.
Wisconsin Avenue’s long-awaited parade is today.
Meanwhile, in the WNBA, the Atlanta Dream beat the Golden State Valkyries 80-69 in a matinee matchup yesterday (12:30 p.m. ET); tip-off was bumped from primetime to lunchtime because of a regular-season NBA game using Atlanta’s arena. Dream owners say the league brushed off schedule warnings they raised two months ago. San Francisco will host the W’s first-ever Finals Game 7 tomorrow night.
Verse to consider whether you’re starting the day in triumph, defeat, or just with an overstuffed to-do list… “Because of the LORD’s faithful love we do not perish, for his mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness!”

Dan v. Dan
On Tuesday, Alaskans will choose among four candidates in a high-stakes race that could determine control of the Senate (see the ballot):
- Gerald L. Heikes (Republican)
- Mary Peltola (Democrat)
- Daniel J. Sullivan Jr.
- Dan S. Sullivan (Republican, incumbent)
On Wednesday, the NYT reported that “operatives aligned with Mary Peltola” recruited both Gerald Heikes and Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. to run, believing that having multiple Republicans and multiple “Dan Sullivans” on the ballot would confuse voters and peel votes away from the incumbent senator.
So-called “ballot stacking” tactics are generally considered legal, but Peltola’s campaign has denied the allegations.
The NYT report comes days after the DOJ sued to block the contest results from being certified if Senator Sullivan loses. President Trump has said both Peltola and the “fake Dan Sullivan” should be removed from the ballot and prosecuted for election fraud.
Do you know who’s on your ballot? We researched your state for hours so you could get up to speed in minutes. Check out TPO’s Midterm Guide to meet your candidates, understand your ballot measures, and pray for your state.
CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
Our hope is never contingent on a political outcome or what's happening on either side of the aisle... it’s much more secure than that. As believers, we have reason to praise the Leader of leaders. In all you do, seek to walk in His holy ways.
“God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in him.”

IN OTHER BREWS…
Health Secretary RFK Jr. is giving unapproved peptides a shot. Wednesday, he moved to shield pharmacies from FDA action for making six peptides marketed for healing injuries and slowing aging. HHS says the policy “advances patient choice” and will curb risky overseas imports, but the American Medical Association’s president warned that fast-tracking peptide usage without more testing “puts patients at risk.”
Flávio Bolsonaro declared himself the “leader of Brazil” from Florida on Wednesday. Brazil’s electoral court says he lost Sunday’s election against incumbent Lula by 4.4M votes, but Bolsonaro has not conceded, citing a two-hour voting extension granted by Brazil’s Supreme Court as evidence of “election fraud.” He said he left Brazil to avoid “political persecution” but hasn’t “abandoned Brazilians.”
The Federal Reserve is staying put. Its rate-setting committee voted 10-2 Wednesday to keep interest rates unchanged (3.75%-4%). The committee acknowledged “inflation remains elevated” but opted to wait for more information, while two members dissented in favor of a quarter-point hike. The decision comes six days ahead of midterms; Fed Chair Warsh said politics played no role. See how interest rates impact your wallet.
Apple is partying like it’s 2012. After more than a decade of saying “pass,” the fruit-phone-maker unveiled a MacBook Pro with a touchscreen. Its OLED display promises better brightness, colors, and viewing angles, and it will also bring back the glowing Apple logo. For those with at least $2,899, you can get your fingerprints on one starting November 6 (watch the captivating ad).
Sir Patrick Stewart died Wednesday at 86. According to a spokesperson, the actor who commanded the U.S.S. Enterprise as Captain Picard and taught the X-Men as Professor Xavier died in his Los Angeles home after “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia.” Stewart’s six-decade career will have its curtain call this December in Avengers: Doomsday.
