The Midwest had a weekend of wicked weather.

At least 27 people were killed—including 18 in southeastern Kentucky and five in St. Louis—and nearly half a million were without power after a series of destructive weather systems swept from the Great Lakes to the D.C. metro area.

Nine people were killed in a “mass casualty event” when a tornado spun through Laurel County, Kentucky, leveling houses and uprooting trees. Governor Andy Beshear (D) said the state’s death toll is “likely to rise” as search and recovery efforts continue.

Meanwhile, a dust storm blew through the Windy City on Friday—Chicago’s first since the 1934 Dust Bowl (watch it roll in). The storm was caused by high winds picking up loose soil from surrounding Illinois farmlands; no significant damage or injuries were reported.

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
Massive weather events and natural disasters remind us that all of the world is not as it should be. But Christians can look forward to an eternity where there’s redemption not just for people, but for creation itself. 

“For the creation was subjected to futility—not willingly, but because of him who subjected it—in the hope that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage to decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children.”
