Ukraine and Iran are the talk of Évian-les-Bains.
Heads of state from seven major economies (plus the E.U. and some invited guests) gathered in the French lakeside town Monday for their three-day summit. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy attended as Russian missiles struck the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a ~1,000-year-old Orthodox monastery, killing 11 and injuring dozens. Ukraine retaliated yesterday, sending drones to a Moscow oil refinery.
Beyond their annual “family photo,” here are the highlights:
- Zelenskyy thanked leaders for strong ideas “to force Russia into peace,” including sanctions on Russia’s oil, gas, and banking sectors.
- President Trump said the U.S. has “nothing to do with” Ukraine but urged Russia to “make a deal.”
Europeans expressed relief that the Iran war is headed for the “rearview mirror” but will maintain sanctions and want Iran’s nuclear program shut down.

Because the conversations of world leaders have real-life impact, it’s tempting to put our hope in them or let them guide us to anxiety. But our allegiance belongs to King Jesus and the hope of the good Kingdom he’s building that cannot be thwarted.
