Big Apple voters hit the polls yesterday to pick their Democratic mayoral candidate. 

Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic Socialist state lawmaker, took the day. He ran a digitally savvy campaign that focused on the city’s high cost of living, promising a rent freeze and free buses, which energized young voters. Former NY Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was hoping for a political comeback after resigning in 2021 amid harassment allegations, conceded the race last night.

Mamdani will take on Republican and independent challengers—including now-independent incumbent Eric Adams—for the mayoral seat in November. 

Meanwhile, New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) directed the Empire State to construct a new zero-emissions nuclear power facility—the nation’s first nuclear plant project in nearly 20 years. The plant will likely take over a decade to build and aims to add enough electricity to power 1 million homes.
