WORLD NEWS

The Iran Markup

President Trump traded his Sharpie for a red pen on the proposed Iran deal.

Ahead of his Situation Room meeting Friday, Trump suggested a “final determination” was coming to make the tenuous ceasefire less… tenuous. But the deal left the White House with further edits around the removal of Iran’s enriched uranium, the future of the country’s nuclear program, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, launching another back-and-forth that could last days.

Trump said he’s in “no hurry” on Saturday: “We’re going to make a great deal, [otherwise] we’ll just go back and finish it off militarily.”

Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz is still locked tight. A Gambian-flagged commercial vessel tried to break through Uncle Sam’s blockade of Iranian ports Saturday—it was met with 20+ warnings, then a missile to the engine room.

PRAY WITH US
Gracious Peacemaker, work peace in the hearts and lands of the U.S. and Iran. Thwart evil plans, and bring to fruition those that lead to flourishing. May leaders be creative in their problem-solving, wise in their choice of counselors, clear-eyed in their negotiating, and compassionate toward the needy. Use these broken vessels to bring about good for your people, rest for your world, and glory for your name. Until the day when every nation reshapes its weapons into tools for peace, and wolves dwell among lambs, we trust you, our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Amen.

U.S. NEWS

Name Dropped

Federal courts handed the Trump administration two setbacks Friday.

A U.S. district judge in Washington ordered President Trump’s name be removed from the Kennedy Center, saying only Congress can change the venue’s name. Any signage or official materials bearing Trump’s name must be changed within 14 days. The order also curtailed renovations scheduled to shut the venue down for two years beginning this summer.

The center’s board said it will appeal, though #47 said he “has no interest in continuing” without full freedom.

Separately, a Virginia judge temporarily blocked the creation of a ~$1.8B “anti-weaponization fund” to compensate individuals claiming to be targets of political investigations. The DOJ says they are “extremely confident” in the fund’s legality, but Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill have oversight concerns. A June 12 hearing will determine next steps.

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
Whether you believe justice has been served or subverted in American courts, we can count on perfect justice and inexhaustible mercy from the courts of heaven. The Lord is not tempted toward partiality, and his verdicts will restore anything sin has broken.

“The Rock—his work is perfect; all his ways are just. A faithful God, without bias, he is righteous and true.”

Victors

The NBA Finals are set, and the Champions League crowned its champion.

The San Antonio Spurs dethroned the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder with a 111-103 Game 7 road win Saturday as (a very weepy) Victor Wembanyama took home the series MVP. With OKC failing to repeat, a new team will raise the Larry O’Brien trophy for a record eighth straight year. The Spurs return to the Finals for the first time in 12 years and host the Knicks Wednesday for Game 1 of the 1999 NBA Finals rematch.

Paris Saint-Germain, however, did repeat, beating English Premier League champion Arsenal 4-3 in a penalty shootout Saturday to remain kings of the European pitch—the first back-to-back title since Real Madrid’s threepeat in 2016-18. Celebrations in Paris turned violent with 400+ arrests and tear gas deployed.

A verse to consider whether you’re feeling on top of your game, down in the dumps, or more average than you’d hoped: “I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I find myself. I know how to make do with little, and I know how to make do with a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.”
Philippians 4:11-13 (CSB) (read full passage)

IN OTHER BREWS…

An “unruly passenger” made multiple attempts to breach the cockpit of a United Airlines flight on Friday, forcing an emergency landing in Madison, WI. The passenger was restrained on board by off-duty law enforcement, then detained by local authorities on the ground. No one was injured, and the flight continued on to Minneapolis without further incident.

President Trump will pinch-hit as headliner for America’s 250th birthday party. Freedom 250 announced Saturday #47 will kick off the 16-day “Great American State Fair” with a speech on June 24 after multiple artists—including Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, and The Commodores—backed out for political and safety reasons. Trump suggested canceling all musical acts in favor of a MAGA rally.

Shrey Parikh buzzed his way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee title Thursday. The 14-year-old from California won a spell-off tiebreaker—spelling a record 32 words in 90 seconds (you gotta see it)—to claim the $52,500 prize on the winning word “bromocriptine.” Redemption’s sweeter than honey: Parikh finished third in 2024 and lost at his school bee last year.

That loud boom that startled Floridians on Friday was Blue Origin’s rocket exploding during test firing (see the explosion), damaging the launchpad and rocking a few houses but causing no deaths or injuries. Jeff Bezos, who owns Blue Origin, called it a “very rough day” but promised to rebuild. Blue Origin is supposed to play a central role in NASA’s Artemis moon program.

That loud boom that startled Bostonians on Saturday afternoon was a 3-foot-wide meteor hitting Earth’s atmosphere at 75,000 mph (listen here). NASA said “the energy released at breakup is estimated to be equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT” and that any pieces that didn’t burn up likely landed in the ocean.
