WORLD NEWS

The Group of 7

G7, the annual world leader get-together, wrapped yesterday.

Heads of state from seven major economies (plus the EU and some other invited countries) met in Canada to discuss the global economy and diplomacy and pose for a mountain-view “family photo.”

During the gathering:

  • President Trump suggested the coalition should expand to G8 or even G9 by reinviting Russia and potentially adding China to the chat

  • Leaders urged Trump to scale down his trade war

  • The U.S. and U.K. signed an agreement removing some trade barriers between the two (steel imports remain unresolved)

  • The leaders collectively issued a statement supporting Israel and condemning Iran as the “principal source of regional instability and terror”

POTUS left the party a day early, citing “what’s going on in the Middle East” and efforts to find “a real end” to Iran’s nuclear program.

Verse to consider as world leaders are making world-impacting decisions… “First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.”
1 Timothy 2:1-2 (CSB) (read full passage)

INDUSTRY

Escalating

President Trump spent yesterday in the Situation Room, reportedly considering having the U.S. join Israel’s attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Since Friday, Israel claims it has killed one of Iran’s top military commanders and his replacement, established control of Iran’s airspace, and destroyed multiple nuclear and military sites. Still, experts say it will struggle to destroy Iran’s deep-underground uranium enrichment facilities without Uncle Sam’s “bunker buster bombs.”

So far, the U.S. has only offered defensive support to Israel, but Trump appears to be escalating his rhetoric against Iran.

Yesterday, Trump said that the U.S. knows exactly where Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei is but won’t kill him “for now,” then called for Iran’s “unconditional surrender.” On Monday, Trump urged the “immediate evacuation” of Tehran (a city of 9.5 million) before leaving the G7 Summit early to meet with his national security advisors.

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
Our response to things outside our control should reflect our faith in Christ and encourage others. In the face of anxiety-inducing news, seek to reflect the peace of God, which surpasses understanding.

“On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.”
Edward Mote, 1863 (Scriptural basis: Hebrews 13:8, Matthew 7:24, Psalm 18:2)

U.S. NEWS

Charged

The man suspected of killing a Minnesota lawmaker faces multiple state and federal charges as more details emerge.

Prosecutors say the 57-year-old man “stalked his victims,” visiting each home and taking notes before the night of the attack. He’s been charged with murder in the deaths of State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, and has attempted murder charges for the shootings of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife.

Officials report the gunman visited the homes of two other Democratic lawmakers in between the attacks—one of those lawmakers was on vacation; at the other, a responding officer mistook the suspect (who did not speak) for fellow law enforcement. He later texted his family, saying, in part, that he “went to war last night” and encouraged them to leave the house.

ABOVE ALL, LOVE
Christians have a hard job. Imitating our just and merciful Father, we must simultaneously celebrate justice, come alongside victims in their pain, and demonstrate our love for the guilty.

“But love your enemies, do what is good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High. For he is gracious to the ungrateful and evil. Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.”
Luke 6:35-36 (CSB) (read full passage)

IN OTHER BREWS…

The Trump Organization is getting into the phone biz with Trump Mobile, a new venture offering a $47.45/month “All-American” wireless plan and a $499 gold Android smartphone. The plan—which offers 5G data, unlimited talk & text, and roadside assistance—will use T-Mobile’s network. Eric Trump said that the company’s T1 smartphones will “eventually” be made in the U.S.

Shohei Ohtani is back on the bump. After 663 days and one elbow surgery, the MLB superstar made his pitching debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday night. In his single-inning appearance on the mound, he threw 100 mph, gave up two hits and one run… then—as he does—threw on a helmet and stepped up to the batter’s box.

Ads are coming to WhatsApp. The Meta-owned messaging app, which has over 3 billion users worldwide, will begin showing ads on its Updates tab and monetizing its Channels feature through search ads and subscriptions. WhatsApp was sold to Facebook (now Meta) in 2014, and its staunchly anti-ads founders left in 2018—reportedly forfeiting $1.3B in stock—over alleged pressure to introduce ads.

Purdue Pharma is payin’ up. Attorneys general in all 50 states and five U.S. territories have agreed to a $7.4B settlement with the pharmaceutical company, including $6.5B directly from the Sackler family (Purdue’s former owners) for their “critical role” in the opioid crisis. The majority of the money will fund state-run addiction treatment and prevention programs.

Mona Lisa may be the only one left smiling in the Louvre. Thousands of tourists were left outside the world’s most-visited museum Monday as staff striked, citing overcrowding and poor conditions. The museum is poised to undergo renovations by 2031. It’s part of a growing backlash across Europe—locals in Italy, Portugal, and Spain say tourism is cramping housing, nature, and neighborhood vibes.
